Dear Evan,

As we approach the Jewish High Holy Days in the coming month, we are struck with a profound sense of concern. This past year has seen too many human rights defenders and journalists, like yourself, under attack and unfairly detained.  At this time, you bring us hope – you, Evan, have stayed strong in the face of overwhelming hardship. We admire your fortitude and we once again call for your speedy release.

On March 29, 2023, your arbitrary arrest and detention for unsubstantiated charges of espionage was and remains an abuse of freedom of expression and information. As Russia continues its illegal invasion of Ukraine, it has also cracked down on human rights within its own borders, engaging in a concerted campaign of repression. Sadly, you appear to have been swept up by the repressive behavior within the country.

Russia has violated your human rights in numerous ways. You were arbitrarily detained and initially denied access to family, and legal and medical assistance. You have been unable to present your case to an independent and impartial tribunal.  You are unable to carry out your professional responsibilities as a journalist. And your detention without trial continues, with only three consular visits, despite numerous requests from the U.S. Ambassador.

We admire your bravery and your commitment to strengthening society through journalism and freedom of information. On behalf of American Jewish Committee and its Jacob Blaustein Institute for the Advancement of Human Rights, we call once again on the Russian government to release you immediately and unconditionally.

As Jewish people around the world gather together to celebrate the New Year, world leaders from around the globe have begun to gather in New York with the convening of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly, we also call on the international community to hold Russia accountable for its continued human rights violations and repression, including your detention. And we send best wishes to you, Evan, for a better year ahead, one that sees you reunited with your family and able to carry out your profession as a journalist without hindrance.

Sincerely,
